Wind Turbine Maker Gamesa Closing Western PA Manufacturing Plant

January 29, 2014 by Paul Crowe

The Spanish wind turbine manufacturer, Gamesa, is closing its Ebensburg, PA plant on March 31st. Gamesa USA officials said Tuesday that the closure of the 8-year-old Cambria County plant was prompted by a shift in the market from Pennsylvania and the Midwest to the southwestern United States. The market may be shifting in their eyes, […]

Local Wind Turbine Being Demolished After Failure and History of Ice Throw

January 28, 2014 by Paul Crowe

A relatively small wind turbine, located at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center on Presque Isle in Erie, PA is being demolished. The wind turbine has been inoperative for quite some time, the blades and the turbine itself had fallen off due to high winds and rather than spend the money to get it repaired and […]

Wind Turbine Falls Over in Western PA

January 18, 2014 by Paul Crowe

A wind turbine fell over in western PA for no apparent reason.

A 1.5 megawatt wind turbine fell over the other night in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, south of Pittsburgh. Why it fell over has not yet been determined. During the debate here in North East over proper setbacks and public safety, pointing out events like this never seemed to have any impact on the discussion because government […]

Wind Turbines Are Not Saving the World, They’re Just Chasing Government Money

June 7, 2013 by Paul Crowe

Taking your land and not saving the world

It’s always nice to see someone putting up their hands and saying, ENOUGH, and that’s what appears to be happening over in the UK with new measures just enacted: The new measures ensure that local views will always take precedence over concerns about the global environment. David Cameron is understood to have intervened in a […]

Do Wind Turbine Blades Ever Come Off? – UPDATED

June 2, 2013 by Paul Crowe

173 foot wind turbine blade comes off during the night at Octillo wind farm

In the same way that you don’t usually think about wind turbine fires, you probably don’t think about wind turbine blades coming loose and flying off, either, but they do. As the recent storms rolled through Oklahoma, the blade shown above came off and hit a daycare center a quarter mile away. Corrected – see […]

If Wind Turbines Were Cars, They Would All Be Recalled – Why Capacity Factor Counts

May 19, 2013 by Paul Crowe

New York wind farm capacity factors

When you buy a car, you want it to be reliable, to work when you need it and you expect the engine to deliver all of the power the salesman told you it would, but suppose it didn’t do any of that. Would you be upset? Sure, you might even demand your money back, but […]

Unfortunately

The less you know about wind energy,
the more you'll like it.

Why wind developers never understand …

It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.

~ Upton Sinclair

Don’t know – Don’t care

Is willful ignorance necessary
to promote wind energy?

No, but it helps.

Climate Change

Another thing I must point out is that you cannot prove a vague theory wrong. … Also, if the process of computing the consequences is indefinite, then with a little skill any experimental results can be made to look like the expected consequences.

~ Richard Feynman, 1964

It’s not on-demand, it’s no-demand

Wind energy is "no-demand" electricity. If the wind isn't blowing and you demand electricity, the answer is no.

Wind – expensive, inefficient, unreliable

December 1923 Popular Science cover dreaming about generating electricity from windmills, and though the dream never dies, the dream doesn't work, didn't then, doesn't now and without huge government giveaways of your money, no wind farms would get built anywhere. The government forces utilities to buy wind power so payments to landowners are simply wind welfare.

Wind energy runs on tax credits

"I will do anything that is basically covered by the law to reduce Berkshire's tax rate, for example, on wind energy, we get a tax credit if we build a lot of wind farms. That's the only reason to build them. They don't make sense without the tax credit."
~ Warren Buffett - from interview with Fortune magazine

Wind investments and high cost green energy

“I’m in the wind business … I’ve lost my ass in the business. ... Hey, we can get on everything green. We can get on everything renewable. Then the cost of power will go up ten times."
~ T. Boone Pickens - on Morning Joe on MSNBC
